all-star-classic-logo-2Every year the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) holds an All-Star Match; an invitational event to show case some of the best talent in the country.

We are proud to say that this years event featured two of our long time members, Anthony Ashnault and Richie Lewis. Richie and Anthony are both New Jersey residents and nationally ranked competitors for Rutgers University.

Anthony found himself down early against the funky and hard to wrestle Bryce Meredith of Wyoming. Meredith, who transferred from North Carolina State to Wyoming last year, took second at last years NCAA DI National Championships. Showing the same toughness that helped him become New Jersey’s first undefeated 4X State Champion, Anthony went to work and forced overtime at 6-6. In overtime Anthony set-up a lefty single and was able to finish cleanly for the 8-6 victory over the number 2 ranked wrestler in the country.

In addition to being a 4X NJ State Champion and two-time All-American, Anthony is also a former Pan-Am medalist and University National Freestyle Champion. In High School he wrestled for South Plainfield and helped lead the team to a state championship. In the off-season he was a member of the prestigious Apex Wrestling School and a member of the their national championship dual teams.

However, in the end Richie came out victorious with a hard fought 2-0 decision. Richie is currently ranked 7th in the country and is one of the leaders of the Rutgers University Wrestling Team. Last year he qualified for the NCAA Championships and complied a a 27-7 regular season victory including a 16-1 mark in dual meets. He was also a Big Ten medalist and finished 4th at last years prestigious Midlands Tournament.

In High School Richie was a 3x time state place finisher including a third place finish his senior year.
